ELLA FITZGERALD AND HER FELLAS: COMPLETE 1942-1953 VOCAL DUETS

Ascoltare Ella Fitzgerald è sempre un’esperienza unica, regina delle Blue Notes, vocalist impareggiabile ed amabilmente disordinata nei propri gusti musicali dalla Bossa al Bop, dallo Swing alle classiche canzoni americane, un prodigio d’invenzione cromatica cresciuto in maniera straordinaria nel corso di una carriera quasi sessantennale, mai e sottolineo mai inficiata da blocchi artistici e tentazioni commerciali, la madre naturale dello Scat, la profetessa delle tre ottave d’estensione…

Non unicamente per dedizione filologica, la casa discografica Essential Jazz Classics pubblica un doppio cd dalla durata totale di ben 160 minuti (!) nel quale rintracciare le bellezza vocale della Regina fin dalle prime performance in Duo, partendo dagli anni nei quali incise per la Decca innumerevoli album segnati dalla costruzione artistica della sua originalità interpretativa, poi culminata nelle incisioni con Louis Armstrong, Oscar Peterson, Count Basie e Duke Ellington. Nei 52 brani inclusi è veramente difficile scegliere quali siano le versioni maggiormente degne di nota: vale davvero la pena ascoltarle tutte in successione, poste in perfetta sequenza dai curatori di questa ottima antologia di canto, gusto del tempo, testimonianza non solo della crescita spirituale di Ella ma anche dell’evoluzione del Jazz nel corso di un decennio decisivo per la sua diffusione ad un livello popolare che possiamo considerare veramente mondiale, del quale lei fu assoluta protagonista.

I Duetti riferiscono anche delle eleganti proposizioni orchestrali, dei curatissimi arrangiamenti, della composta postura tecnica in costante ascesa di una giovane Ella, del suo stile colorato e più vorticoso negli anni a venire, della sua estrema facilità ad abbracciare stili diversi quale “strumentista della voce” (alla pari solo con Billie Holiday) e grande, grandissima, improvvisatrice.

And her tears flowed like wine con The song spinner e la Johnny Long Orchestra, I’m getting mighty lonesome for you con The four keys assieme alla maestria di Slim Furness alla chitarra, That’s my desire con lo splendido quintetto di Andy Love, Dream a little dream of my con il fratello di sangue Louis Armstrong , Ain’t nobody’s business but my own con Louis Jordan & His Tympany Five, Airmail special con The Ray Charles Singers, poco prima di comparire come ospite e Genio del canto in programmi televisivi con Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole e Dean Martin, a “preparazione stilistica” dello storico “Ella in Berlin” del 1960, concerto nel quale leggenda vuole che, non ricordando il testo, cominciò ad improvvisare con ritmo impareggiabile e brio cromatico, per la nascita ufficiale dello Scat.

Si dia un’occhiata ai prezzi sul web: 160 minuti di Ella a pochi euro; quasi un regalo.

Che dire? Non esisterà mai un’altra Ella…
